Assistant General Manager Duties and Responsibilities


When a general manager is out of work or needs help with their duties, they turn to the assistant general manager (commonly called AGM). This valued team member, committed to ensuring operations run smoothly, interacts with a wide range of employees and customers. Deputy CEO shifts may vary based on institutional needs and opening hours, and may go beyond the standard full-time during peak periods or as deadlines approach. While deputy general managers spend a lot of time in their office, some are also often in areas where employees and customers interact. For example, an assistant general manager of a hotel could oversee actions at the front desk, walk through the gardens, talk to guests by the pool, and check the quality of room cleanliness.

The duties expected of an assistant general manager vary by company, but some basic jobs are almost always associated with the position. Based on our ad analysis, assistant general managers should be prepared to do the following:

As the "right hand (or woman)" of the general manager, the assistant follows the instructions given by this leader. The actions cover the whole gamut: creating employee schedules, assigning tasks, managing payroll, and hiring new workers, to name a few possibilities. The nature of requests often depends on the experience level of the Deputy CEO, with experienced ones taking on more demanding tasks. The CEO's preferences also play a role, with some delegated tasks that they don't like to do themselves.

To observe

Good CEOs keep their eyes and ears open. They are attentive to their surroundings and their activities. Whether it's a spill on the floor or employees taking too long on breaks, the assistant CEOs take notice and take action. Through their observations, they were able to find improvements that could benefit the company. If the change is simple, the assistant general manager could fix it, for example by asking someone to empty the trash can outside a fast food restaurant twice per shift instead of once to prevent it from overflowing. More complex suggestions are presented to the CEO for approval.

Give opinion

Employee observation is perhaps one of the most valuable and time-consuming forms of observation that Deputy CEOs do. When these leaders identify problems, they must take steps to correct them. Actions could include explaining what is wrong, providing additional training, and setting improvement goals. On the other hand, assistant CEOs should never be stingy with praise when they notice good things, as positive comments boost morale and performance.
