Duties and responsibilities of the Senior Network Engineer

Senior Network Engineers are the masters who organize the moving parts involved in the efficient management of a corporate network. Their work is more project based than activity. Senior network engineers oversee the service ticket workflow and delegate most tasks to IT support engineers or junior network engineers. They only accept service tickets that are too complex to be handled by lower-level personnel. Virtually every industry employs senior network engineers. Small and medium-sized businesses take on this job from IT companies, while large companies have an in-house IT department. Working for a company is slightly different from working directly for a company, but not much. Senior network engineers still work in an office, receive a salary, and spend most of their time behind a computer.

This role is a senior leadership position. Senior Network Engineers are only accountable to the CTO. They have support technicians, network technicians and junior network engineers under their command.

Duties and responsibilities of the Senior Network Engineer

Ensuring the proper functioning of a company's network is no easy task. Like the captain of a ship, senior network engineers have many responsibilities which, if neglected, will result in catastrophic failures. Below is a list of the most important tasks for senior network engineers.

Design of functional networks

Senior network engineers collaborate with network architects to design and build functional networks from the ground up based on the specific needs of the employer.

Configure and install network hardware and software

Using their knowledge of the routing and communication protocol, senior network engineers ensure that all machines on a network communicate properly with each other. They are also responsible for installing and updating network security software.

Monitor network performance

Although senior network engineers take a long time to put out fires, they regularly monitor network performance to try and detect them before they occur.

Create and implement network security measures

The network security protocol is created and applied by the senior network engineer. This includes configuring and monitoring things like user access levels, data access history, and other related security issues.

Delegate network maintenance activities

Most basic network maintenance tasks can be delegated to an IT Support Engineer or Junior Network Engineer.

Provide network status reports to the CTO

Senior network engineers are in constant contact with the CTO. They must create and present regular network reports in weekly meetings
