Duties and responsibilities of the computer administrator

IT administrators are in charge of supervising the daily operation of IT networks. They manage the configuration and maintenance of these networks, including the identification and resolution of problems and the updating of equipment and software. They gather critical information from network users to determine problems and document troubleshooting efforts to help identify solutions. Most computer administrators work full time. Because a functioning network is critical to business success, these professionals may have to work overtime, such as nights and weekends, to solve problems

Duties and responsibilities of the computer administrator

Computer administrators have several specific and universal core tasks for which they are responsible. Based on our review of job postings, these main activities are:

Plan computer and network systems

Computer administrators analyze and determine what an organization requires on both a network and a computer system before installing and configuring it. If a system is already present, updates may be required.

Install hardware and software

They are responsible for all installation activities, including all necessary network hardware and software. Additionally, they are also responsible for adding users to the network and assigning and updating security permissions.

Monitor performance

Another key task is the collection and recording of data to evaluate the performance of the network or system with the ultimate goal of optimizing the system so that it works better and more efficiently.

Maintain systems

Once the network is configured, computer administrators must maintain the network and information systems, including security features, to ensure optimal performance. You also need to schedule routine maintenance.

User training

Since computer administrators are responsible for installing and updating different types of hardware and software within the network, they must train users in their proper use through individual or group training sessions, presentations, or instructional PDFs.

Solve problems

Computer administrators must evaluate the problems identified by users and make several troubleshooting attempts to fix them. They also need to document their referral attempts.
