Computer Operator Nature Of work

Computer operators manage the operation of hardware systems. You often have to work with most types of computers, including minicomputers, mainframes, and personal computer networks. Computer operators must maintain the computer hardware and correct any problems that arise. The tasks of a computer operator vary depending on the computer system.

Computer operators are essential for the daily operation of older mainframes and minicomputers. These computer systems consist of a network of smaller computer terminals (monitors and keyboards) that are connected to a central core, which contains all the software and the entire memory of the system. Most older mainframes and minicomputers have a central control panel. While the computer is running, an operator closely monitors the error messages on the console, which may still indicate that the computer is not working properly. If a light comes on or the computer stops, the operator must locate and fix the problem. The operators keep logbooks and operational records for the device and record all errors and mistakes. If the files and programs of the computer system are on discs or tapes, the operator must ensure that the computer is loaded with these storage media. Experienced operators can help computer programmers or system analysts test programs.

In the case of a PC network, the computer operator can help a network administrator to ensure that all network connections are in place and that the network and the servers function smoothly. They can also help users connect computer peripherals such as printers or laboratory equipment, or help new employees set up a computer.

Computer operators work for many companies and industries, including banks, insurance companies and manufacturers. They are also used by government agencies, educational institutions, and companies that offer computer services.

The trend towards networking and the use of sophisticated software has enabled computers to perform tasks that were previously performed by operators. With the advancement of technology and the move away from central computers to personal computing networks, the tasks of computer operators are shifting from device maintenance to network support, user support and database maintenance.
